Three ‘policemen’ booked for robbing shop owner

SAHIWAL: Three policemen were booked for robbing a department store owner of Rs130,000 cash near Ghora Chowk of the city three weeks after the incident. According to details, Muhammad Afzal, a resident of Chak 89/6-R, owned a general store at the General Bus Stand. He was returning home on his motorcycle with cash after closing his store at night. While traveling on his usual route near Ghora Chowk, three policemen in uniform on a motorcycle intercepted him. The officers asked him about registration documents of his motorcycle and driving license, searched him thoroughly and snatched Rs130,000 cash from his pockets. They asked Afzal to follow them to the Farid Town Police Station for further investigation but themselves disappeared toward the Railway Road. When Afzal reached Farid Town Police Station as directed, the Moharar informed him that no police officers were stationed at Ghora Chowk and that the area fell in the jurisdictions of the City Police Station. Afzal went to the City Police Station, only to be told that no officers were deputed at Ghora Chowk for motorcycle inspection. Afzal then approached District Police Officer Faisal Shahzad who ordered registration of a criminal case against three policemen. City Police registered criminal case 8/25 against three unidentified policemen after a week. City SHO Asif Sarwar informed Dawn that police were investigating whether the officers were genuine or impersonators. A source close to the situation told Dawn on condition of anonymity that two of the suspects were actually policemen while the third was a civilian. ACCIDENT: A loader rickshaw driver was killed when a fast-moving car collided with his three-wheeler at Bhutto Nagar. The female car driver, identified as Sabah Shabbir, fled the scene. Reports indicate that Muhammad Umer was emerging from a street on the main road when the car hit his rickshaw. Rescue 1122 transported Umer to the Sahiwal Teaching Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. City Police have registered a case against Sabah Shabbir on a complaint by the deceased’s brother, Sabir Hussain. : Unidentified robbers hit seven different places and robbed people of Rs2.8m cash, gold ornaments, cattle and mobile phones in the past 24 hours. Noor Shah, Yousafwala, Harappa and Ghala Mandi Police registered seven FIRs.
