MIGRATORY BIRDS

Sindh’s wetlands serve as vital stopovers for migratory birds travelling thousands of kilometres from Siberia and Central Asia. These birds contribute to the region’s ecological balance and biodiversity. Unfortunately, hunters kill these migratory birds and share pictures on social media with pride. This overexploitation disrupts the natural migratory patterns, and leads to declining bird population. Moreover, Sindh’s wetlands are shrinking, further reducing safe havens for these birds. The diminishing presence of migratory birds not only affects biodiversity, but also has cultural and economic implications, as birdwatching tourism declines. Strict enforcement of hunting laws, awareness campaigns, and conservation initiatives are crucial to the task of protecting these birds. Conflicts driven by ego and pride have led to unnecessary bloodshed and suffering in Qadirpur. Such tragedies only fuel the ongoing cycle of violence. It is disheartening to see how certain elements per-petuate this culture of conflict. Meanwhile, the resources and development funds allocated for Ghotki, especially Qadirpur, are being exploited by outsiders due to this internal disarray. The people of Qadirpur should rise above their destr-uctive tendencies, and prioritise the welfare of their families and communities. All concerned should contribute to efforts aimed at controlling the menace. Since the con-sumers of utility services, including electricity and gas, pay consumption charges regularly, there appears to be no justification of imposing fixed charges, like those imposed by K-Electric (KE) and the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). The relevant ministry, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) should look into the matter on a priority basis and put a stop to these misplaced and unfair charges.
