HYDERABAD: Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam, launched a campaign in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to promote agricultural sustainability for combating challenges of climate change. Under supervision of the SAU’s public relations section, the campaign was part of a project titled “Transforming Indus Basin with Climate Resilient Agriculture and Water Management”. A series of roadshows were held and a play was staged to raise awareness among farmers and agricultural communities. These activities were conducted across 11 union councils in the districts of Umerkot, Sanghar and Badin, engaging over 2,000 farmers and agricultural workers. The roadshows were set in a traditional Sindhi autaq environment, creating a welcoming and effective atmosphere for the farming community. A highlight of the event was the stage play Mosami tabdeeli maaray widdhu (victim of climate change), performed by renowned Sindhi artists. The play creatively depicted serious challenges posed by climate change to agriculture through humour and drama, capturing audience’s attention and delivering the message effectively. Dr Ghulam Murtaza Jamro, project focal person from the SAU, emphasised the importance of adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices, stating: “Sustainable agriculture was essential to counter the challenges posed by climate change. Initiatives like these equip farmers with tools and knowledge to adapt to the changes effectively.” Dr Ashfaq Ahmed Nahyoon, FAO provincial coordinator, highlighted the importance of empowering farming communities with practical techniques. He said that “by equipping farmers with actionable skills, we are strengthening their resilience against climatic impacts and ensuring food security.” Experts from the SAU and FAO, including Dr Zahoor Ahmed Soomro, Dr Mohammad Mithal Lund, Dr Rajesh Kumar, Zulfiqar Ali Mari, Ghulam Hussain Wagan, Bakht Tunio, Kaltar Gul, Ali Akbar and Wul Mohammad Rind, provided valuable insights into sustainable agricultural techniques: raised bed farming, intercropping, laser levelling and advanced water management strategies. Progressive farmers such as Pir Bux Dero, former district nazim of Sanghar, and Noor Ahmed Talpur, chairman of Tando Ghulam Ali Town Committee, praised the collaborative efforts of the SAU and FAO. Mr Dero stated: “Such initiatives and sessions are highly beneficial for adapting to climate change and protecting our crops. The knowledge shared here has inspired us to adopt modern and sustainable practices to safeguard our farms and future harvests.” The event featured performances by prominent television actors, including Manzoor Murad, Manzoor Danish, Zulfi Shah (Basar Badshah), Shehbaz Baloch, Shama Sindhi, Yaseen Chan, Sajid Ahmed, and others, who captivated the audience with their engaging performances.
