RAWALPINDI: Alleging that the PTI top leadership was pursuing politics of confrontation, Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan on Tuesday invited the opposition party to sit and iron out differences instead of creating unrest on the eve of Shanghai conference in Islamabad. Talking to media after the first convocation of Rawalpindi Women’s University, the governor said the former PTI chairman would have to shun politics of stubbornness, abuse and bullets. “I suggest that if political parties sit on table with President Asif Ali Zardari, things will improve,” he said. He said holding protest was the right of the PTI but it should stop it till the end of the Shanghai conference. “I am in favour of the constitutional amendments. It is part of Charter of Democracy but could not be included in the 18th amendment. The PPP wants to include them in the current amendments,” he said. “It is disappointing and an irresponsible attitude whether it is Ali Amin or Imran Khan or any member of PTI to make policy issues politicised. They should think about the future of the country,” he said. Asif Ali Zardari has the ability to make consensus on difficult issues, he said. About his differences with the Punjab government over the appointment of vice chancellors, the governor said there was no issue and he only wanted merit in the appointments. At the first convocation of Rawalpindi Women’s University, where the governor was chief guest, degrees were issued to 847 students from the faculties of science, humanities and social sciences. Moreover, 10 students were awarded gold medals, nine silver medals and 13 given third and fourth position certificates. The governor distributed medals and certificates among the students. Speaking on the occasion, he said the first convocation of the women university was a historic moment. “Pakistan is the only Muslim country which is a nuclear power and can lead the Islamic world, but for that there must be peace and harmony in the country.” He said it was hoped that the young generation will thwart the enemy’s plan to divide the nation. Education plays the role of a ladder in the progress and success of nations. “When Pakistan was made, there was one university, while the number of universities in the country at present is 265, which is a remarkable achievement. It is very important for women to be educated to maintain the country’s development and social values,” he said. By equipping women with education, a balanced society can be brought into existence. The governor said the greatest characteristic of a person is his character. People associated with education are associated with the profession of prophets. Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said the role of HEC in increasing the rate of higher education was constructive. At the time of establishment of HEC, there were 51 universities across the country while the number of universities in 2024 is 265. Women are getting education on the basis of equality. Higher education programmes in all departments are going on in different universities. Today, nearly 40,000 researches are being published from Pakistan.
