LAHORE: The classic Makhdum Syed Hassan Mahmud Memorial New Year Cup to be contested over 1,400 metres will be the feature event in a seven-event card drawn for the Racecourse here on Sunday. The seven-star studded race to be contested over 1,400 metres features three-year-old thoroughbreds. The race carries a bumper cash award of Rs2 million for the winner, Rs500,000 for the runner-up and Rs300,000 for the third-place finisher. Moreover, a prize of Rs100,000 is earmarked for the breeder of the three-year-old champion colt or filly. The supporting event, Ghaznavi Cup, a class six handicap race to be contested over 1,200 metres contains eight runners. Both the events look to be open affairs in which a quartet or more contenders are on chance. In all, 67 runners are to take part, if there are no last-minute withdrawals, in today’s races. The first race will be held at 12:00pm.
