UAF to launch wheat sowing drive in five Punjab divisions

TOBA TEK SINGH: The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) is going to launcha 13-day wheat sowing campaign from November 18, in collaboration with the Punjab Agriculture Extension Department to disseminate useful information among the farmers to increase crop productivity. This was announced by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhamad Sarwar Khan while chairing the deans’ committee meeting on Wednesday He said that during the drive, thousands of postgraduate degree and 7th Semester BSc students of the UAF, under the supervisions of experts, will visit fields in various villages of the five divisions of Punjab to disseminate recommendations in order to help increase per acre wheat output. The divisions to be covered during the campaign include Lahore, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Gujarart, and Gujranwala, he added. He said the campaign would also help the students get first-hand on-field knowledge of issues faced by the farming community. The VC said that in the drive, the students will persuade farmers to adopt the latest wheat sowing practices, use certified seeds and balanced usage of fertilizer. The three-day International Microbiology Conference started at the Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) on Wednesday, attended by scientists, professors and researchers from all over Pakistan, along with those from UK, Japan, USA, Canada, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. The event, presided over by VC Dr Rauf-I-Azam, is aimed at address the challenges in the fields of microbiology, agriculture, industry, medicine and environment and suggest a coherent plan to overcome these in the future. The chief organisers of the conference are Institute of Microbiology Director Dr Hidayat Rasool and Life Sciences Dean Dr Farhat Jabeen. In his address on the first day of the conference, VC Dr Rauf said such conferences provide an opportunity to scientists and researchers to set new paths for their respective fields in the light of their research. He further said that in the context of changing conditions, research and new inventions in the field of microbiology are indispensable. He called for regular updates in the curriculum being taught in Pakistan according to modern requirements to address the needs of industry and protect the environment. Dr Hidayat Rasool also spoke. ARRESTED: A youth has been arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency’s cybercrime circle at Faisalabad for his alleged involvement in child pornography. A press release says on Wednesday that accused Asim Riaz of Samundri and his accomplices were involved in uploading edited pornographic pictures of children on social media. It says the FIA has seized the suspect’s mobile phone which contained the edited obscene pictures, while raids are being conducted to arrest his other accomplices. A man died when a motorcycle hit a trailer’s rear part due to poor visibility caused by smog near Sadhar bypass Road at Faisalabad on Wednesday. Police say Khalid Mukhtar (50) of Gojra, along with his daughterAyesha Bibi (17), was going to Faisalabad on motorcycle when it hit the trailer. As a result, Khalid died instantly, while his daughter was injured critically. She was shifted to the Allied Hospital. SIBLINGS DIE: A young man and his sister died on Wednesday as their motorcycle was run over by two racing tractor-trolleys laden with maize, near Chak 393 GB, Bhatta Stop, on Tandlianwala-Faisalabad Road. Reports said Shahzad Ahmad (24) of Sargodha was returning to Faisalabad, along with his sister Ghulam Zainab (22), when two tractor-trolleys coming from the opposite direction first collided with each other and then ran over their bike. As a result, the siblings were seriously injured and Shahzad died instantly, while his sister succumbed to her injuries in Tandlianwala THQ Hospital.
