LOWER DIR: Special assistant to chief minister on prisons Humayun Khan has said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved Rs100 million for repair, renovation and provision of missing facilities at the Timergara District Jail. He was talking to a gathering of inmates during a visit to the prison on Wednesday. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf MPAs Malik Shafiullah Khan, Malik Liaqat Ali, party activists, jail superintendent Mohammad Ayub Khan and others were also in attendance. Mr Humayun and MPA Shafiullah visited different sections of the jail, checked quality of food and medicines and directed the staff to provide quality food to inmates. Jail superintendent Mohammad Ayub briefed the lawmakers about the facilities being provided to prisoners. He pointed out that 364 prisoners belonging to the region had been sent to different jails in other parts of the country as the convicts with over five years of imprisonment could not be kept in district jail. Prisoners demanded provision of gas and hot water in winter. The lawmaker asked the prisoners to strictly follow the jail manual. He said everyone should hate crime not criminals. Mr Humayun said the government had taken multiple measures to bring reforms in jails. He asked the jail staff to behave with inmates politely. He said jail washrooms, barracks and kitchen were being refurbished. Timergara tehsil chairman Mufti Irfanuddin has threatened to set up a protest camp along with all members of the council outside the Adial Jail in Rawalpindi on Dec 17 if the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government failed to release funds to the local bodies in Dir. Speaking at a news conference at the Timergara Press Club, Mr Irfanuddin, who belongs to Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, also threatened that the council members would not hesitate to tender collective resignations if their demand was not accepted. Flanked by the council’s convener Javed Iqbal, village council chairmen Mohammad Ibrahim, he said the government had released funds only to the 51 PTI-backed tehsils while those backed by the opposition parties had been deprived of funding. He accused Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur of political bias and ignoring 80 tehsil councils. He said the tehsil municipal administrations also faced severe financial crunch as the government had not released funds to them for last three years.
