LAHORE: Prosecutor General (PG) of Punjab Syed Farhad Ali Shah on Friday reprimanded the investigating officer of Gulberg police for irresponsible and substandard investigation in the murder of a woman by her in-laws. The PG had taken notice of the murder of Sumaira, who was allegedly subjected to brutal violence by her mother-in-law and husband in Gulberg area, summoning the relevant prosecutor and the investigating officer along with the record. During the briefing, the IO informed the PG that a discharge report had been prepared upon completing the investigation. Asked about the grounds for preparing the discharge report, the IO failed to provide a satisfactory explanation to the PG. Mr Shah reprimanded the IO and directed him to declare the cause of death of the deceased based on the post-mortem report and the findings of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency. He also sent a letter to the Punjab medical legal surgeon, requesting a clarification of the cause of death in light of the forensic report and instructed full cooperation with the investigating officer. Separately, the PG took notice of the illegal interference in the investigation by senior police officers. He directed the Faisalabad city police officer to take action against a superintendent of police (SP) and the IO concerned for causing a delay in effecting the arrest of an arrested suspect in a criminal case.
