MANSEHRA: Kohistan Muttahida Jirga on Wednesday gave a three-day deadline to Wapda to accept their major demand of an enhanced payment of compensation to the affected families, or they would forcibly suspend work on the Dasu hydropower project. “Having representation from all the three districts of Kohistan region, Muttahida Jirga met here and decided to suspend work on the project if a charter of demands is not accepted by the authorities concerned within next three days,” Maulana Abdul Hakeem, an elder, spelt out the jirga’s demands during a presser in Dasu after the forum’s meeting. “This time around we would get the work on the dam suspended and then hold talks with Wapda. If Wapda chairman is sincere in addressing our issues, he should come forward and announce his intentions,” Mr Hakeem said. Maulana Abdul Aziz, another jirga member, said the forum demanded that the district administration paid compensation to the affected families without delay. “All the agreements signed between Wapda and affected families in 2016 should be honoured,” he said. Maulana Waliullah Tohidee, another elder, said the compensation amount should be enhanced from the existing Rs3.5 million to Rs4.7 million per family. “The people of Kohistan should be provided with employment opportunities, and the schemes approved should be executed through local communities,” he said.
