HYDERABAD: Local leadership of Jamaat-i-Islami has lashed out at district police of Hyderabad for their high-handedness against a staff member of the party’s charity hospital, Al-Khidmat, and announced holding a sit-in outside the SSP office on Wednesday. Hyderabad JI emir Hafiz Tahir Majeed, deputy emir Abdul Qayyum Shaikh, general secretary Haneef Sheikh and Furqan Hafeez, administrator of Al-Khidmat hospital Latifabad, and others told a news conference at local press club on Monday that additional SHO of B-Section police station Latifabad, Ali Nawaz Korai, subjected Furqan Hafeez to torture in the hospital and then dragged him to the police station where he subjected him to violence again on Saturday. Sharing details of the incident, Mr Majeed said that a woman had had C-section surgery in the hospital on Dec 12. She was discharged after two days and got her stitches removed by a gynecologist at her private clinic, he said, adding Mr Korai stomped into the hospital on Saturday and forcibly obtained the patient’s original file to which Mr Hafeez objected. He said that Hafeez told the official that if the file was needed in connection with some inquiry then he should be asked to produce the document through official channels, otherwise the patient’s original file could not be taken away in such a fashion. Besides, Korai should disclose purpose of his visit, he said. Mr Majeed said that it transpired later the woman’s family was connected with some government official who had spoken to the SSP. This highhandedness was a serious incident in the city, which showed that Hyderabad police were converting the city into a ‘katcha’ area of upper Sindh where police had failed to control dacoits, he said. He said the patient’s family was now demanding that she be compensated for some urological complications. The hospital made an offer to the family that it could afford the patient’s treatment at SIUT Karachi but the family backed out and only insisted on getting the money, he said. He said the additional SHO was also forcing the hospital management to settle the issue with the family by paying it a hefty amount as compensation, which the hospital had declined. JI would hold a sit-in outside SSP office on Wednesday if Korai was not dismissed, he warned. He said that Hyderabad police was so inefficient it failed to execute an operation and caused killing of an innocent resident of Tandojam, Hassan Nizamani, in upper Sindh. Mr Majeed said that policemen unneces­sarily harassed youth on roads and instead of traffic police, the staff of the police station concerned checked vehicles’ documents to extort money from vulnerable youth. He said that he had tried to contact the SSP but the officer did not attend his phone call. The SSP being a close relative of home minister behaved in an arrogant manner, he complained. Hyderabad SSP Dr Farrukh Ali told Dawn that Mr Hafeez’s father had visited him at his office and DSP Latifabad had been directed to look into the matter. The DSP was told to submit his findings to him, he said and denied that any official had asked him to intervene in an issue involving a patient operated upon in the hospital.
