Usurping public space

IN a recent development in Karachi, close to the Lucky Star area in downtown Saddar, which falls under the jurisdiction of the relevant cantonment board, a facility that used to be a public toilet till not long ago has been converted into a commercial building comprising several shops. In fact, a few of these shops have already comm-enced operations, while a small restroom facility constructed alongside these shops remains locked. The transformation of public amenities into commercial enterprises raises significant concerns. Public toilets are essential in busy urban areas, providing necessary services to residents and visitors, especially to vulnerable groups, such as women, children, the elderly, and those with medical conditions. The absence of accessible public restrooms can lead to public health issues, and diminishes the quality of life in the community. The cantonment board concerned is entrusted with the responsibility of ensu-ring adequate public facilities within its jurisdiction. The repurposing of a public utility space for commercial gains by the custodians of law without providing a functional alternative appears to contradict this mandate. The relevant authorities should ensure immediate operational status of the newly-constructed restroom facility, making it accessible to the public without further delay. The cantonment board should review the decision to convert public utility spaces into commercial properties, considering the long-term impact on community welfare and urban infrastructure. It must engage with the community, and ensure that public needs are prioritised in terms of urban planning as well as development within its land jurisdiction.
