THIS is with reference to the editorial ‘Complete impunity; (Sept 16). The inspector-general (IG) of Sindh Police could not attend the Senate committee briefing as the Sindh High Court (SHC) had sought his personal appearance on the same day. However, the IG had deputed a high-ranking team to represent him at the committee meeting. As for the low conviction rate, there are multiple factors, including the judicial process, involved. On its part, the police department is working to address all possible bottlenecks and ensure timely justice. Several initiatives have been under-taken in this regard over the last couple of years. Besides, the cases filed are pending trial in courts, and have nothing to do with the police department. The presence of traditional dispute resolution mechanisms, like jirgas, in some areas of Sindh is due to the absence of a formal alternative dispute resolution (ADR) law in the province. The department is working with the provincial govern-ment for the enactment of an ADR law.
