SWABI: Speakers at a seminar against drugs said that spread of narcotics to higher educational institutions across the country was deplorable and emphasised the need for evolving a comprehensive strategy to eradicate this menace. The seminar titled “Say No to Drugs” was organised by the University of Swabi (UoS) here on Monday. Retired major general Aniqur Rahman Malik was the chief guest on the occasion. Commissioner Mardan Javed Marwat, Deputy Commissioner Nasrullah Khan, press club members, scholars, police officials and a large number of students participated in the seminar. Organisers said that the main objective of the seminar was to infuse a new enthusiasm in all stakeholders of our society, including the educated youth to create awareness about the dangerous effects of narcotics. They stressed that society as a whole had to take result-oriented steps to control this danger while saving future of young generations on one hand and the country’s future on the other. The speakers emphasised on taking solid drug prevention measures and involvement of everyone, especially the parents, to curb this menace. Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Aniqur Rehman expressed his grave concern over the use of drugs by the youth as the number of drug addicts in the country had almost touched the figure of 15 million. “I have to say with great regret that drugs are now being used in educational institutions,” he said, adding that the saving the youth from narcotics was required on awar footing basis by both the government and the society. Commissioner Javed Marwat said that the war against drugs was not only the responsibility of institutions but the ordinary citizens should also come forward to play their due role to save the younger generation. A security guard of GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology was killed in a road accident. Relatives of the deceased Gulzar Khan said that he was going home on a motorcycle when he hit a building due to over-speeding. As a result, he was seriously injured and rushed to nearest medical facility, but he succumbed to his injuries.
