THE Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Peshawar, despite the irregularities in its operation, is a low-cost transport system serving over 300,000 passengers daily. It extends from Karkano Market to Chamkani, and has 13 routes. There are 224 third-generation diesel/hybrid buses, including 18-meter buses with a passenger capacity of 125, and 12-meter buses with a passenger capacity of 75, according to the BRT Peshawar official website. But, because of the large number of passengers and overcrowded buses, it is getting hard to travel in BRT, especially for women and senior citizens. Recently, while going from Islamia College to Saddar Bazaar, I almost suffocated in the bus, and hardly made my way out through the stampede at the designated station. To make the travel more convenient and comfortable, the BRT management needs to add at least 20 more buses to the fleet. The inclusion of more buses will not only lower the burden on the existing buses, but it will also add to the revenues that are being generated by the facility.
