LAHORE: Students of the Alhamra-Ajoka Theatre Workshop are set to showcase their latest production, Oonth Patang, at Alhamra Hall 2 on Tuesday (today). This powerful play, entirely developed and produced by the students, addresses the pressing issues of animal rights and social justice. Oonth Patang draws inspiration from a recent tragic incident where a landlord brutally ordered a camel’s leg to be cut off for trespassing. This horrific event gained widespread media coverage, shedding light on the inhumane treatment of animals by landlords and waderas. In the play, the camel, named Sassi, bravely takes legal action against the wadera in her quest for justice. The narrative cleverly incorporates the legendary tale of Sassi Punoon, giving the story an added layer of cultural significance. Set against the backdrop of south Punjab, the play features vibrant folk dances and Sufi poetry, blending entertainment with deep reflection. A highlight of the production is the large camel puppet, designed by student Dildar Mustafa and his team, which adds a striking visual element to the performance. The cast includes Dildar Mustafa, Abdullah Saif, Sadeed Zia, Esha Alrazia, Shamsul Haq, Abu Huraira, Shafeeh Sheikh, Saima Sajjad, Aiman Munir, Saifur Rehman, Javed Bhatti, Hanad Ahmad and Munibur Rehman. The concept for Oonth Patang began as a student’s idea and was further refined by Saima Sajjad and Esha Alrazia, with guidance from playwright Shahid Nadeem. The two-month-long workshop benefited from the expertise of trainers Nirvaan Nadeem, Luke Kelvin, Sohail Warraich, Usman Zia and Madeeha Rasheed. Directed by Ajoka’s Naseem Abbas, the production promises to deliver a polished and impactful performance. Musical accompaniment by Kanwal Christopher and Aniqa Malik will further enhance the theatrical experience. A certificate distribution ceremony will follow the performance to honour the students for their dedication and hard work during the workshop.
