KHARAN, a historic city in Balochistan famed for its abundant cultural and archaeological heritage, is currently witnessing a severe threat to its precious historical sites. A new construction has sparked intense concerns, as it disregards the protection of ancient landmarks, notably the 7,000-year-old sites of Harogok and Gork-damb. These invaluable sites, rich in historical and cultural significance, were bulldozed by the construction company, with their rubble used as mere waste material. These sites have not only local, but global significance, having been brought to the world’s attention by British historians Henry Pottinger and Sir Mark Orwell Stein. In recognition of their historical value, Pakistan had previously designated these sites as national heritage. To prevent any further loss of cultural treasures, there is an urgent need for immediate and decisive intervention by all tiers of government to safeguard and preserve these ancient landmarks.
