Drug peddler sentenced to nine years in prison

TAXILA: A special court for the Control of Narcotics Substances (CNS) in Hassanabdal sentenced a drug peddler to nine-year imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs80,000. The accused Zahid Ali, a native of Kot Dadu, was arrested by Hassanabdal police this year after recovery of hashish from his possession and a case was registered against him under section 9-C of control of narcotics substance act 1997. The additional sessions judge Zahid Mehmood after hearing the arguments of defence and prosecution announced the verdict as the convicted was found guilty of selling drugs. During the proceedings, the public prosecutor for the state argued that the accused was caught smuggling the contraband and the evidence on record fully connected him with the commission of the offence. He maintained that the accused was charged with a heinous offence and he did not deserve any leniency. In case of non-payment, the accused will have to face jail for another six months. A man was shot dead while another injured in two separate incidents in the limits of Taxila and Wah Saddar police stations on Saturday, police sources said. According to police , Safeer along with his father Zahoor was coming in his car when reached near Thatta Khalil, two masked persons came on a motorcycle tried to intercept them but he accelerated the speed to avoid the looting bid. One of the armed bandit opened fire at them resultantly Safeer received a bullet at his chest and died on the spot. Later his body was shifted to tehsil headquarters hospital for autopsy. Meanwhile, a shopkeeper was shot and injured in the limits of Wah Saddar police station. Mohammad Imran reported to police that he was present at his shop when two masked men entered and demanded cash from him. As he put up resistance, the armed bandits opened fire on him and fled. Respective police have registered separate cases and launched further investigation.
