KARACHI: A man was shot dead on the outskirts of the metropolis on Wednesday. The Shah Latif Town police said that assailants arrived at the house of Sarfaraz Bachkani, 60, and rang the doorbell. When he came out, they shot him and fled. The man died on the spot. The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities. The police said that the murder appeared to be motivated by some ‘personal dispute’. A suspected carjacker was shot at and wounded in an ‘encounter’ in Saddar while his four alleged accomplices were arrested on Wednesday. Preedy police said the encounter took place on Sohrab Katrak Road where after an exchange of gunfire, suspect Zeeshan Sharif was wounded while Muzammil, Farhan, Azan and Shehzad were arrested. A South police spokesperson said that the five suspects were going in a white Corolla car and on a motorcycle when policemen signalled them to stop near the Shalimar bus stand. The suspects resorted to firing in their bid to flee. The police also returned the fire. After the encounter, the police said one pistol, eight snatched cell phones, one laptop, the stolen Corolla car from Preedy and the bike, which was also stolen from the Brigade area, were recovered from their possession. The recovered car had been stolen two days ago. Apart from stealing cars and bikes, the suspects were wanted in other crimes in the metropolis. There were seven FIRs registered against the injured suspect Zeeshan while there was one FIR against Shehzad. The injured suspect was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. A police constable was shot at and wounded by suspected robbers near Banaras Bridge on Wednesday. Pirabad police SHO Imtiaz Mirjat said that constable Syed Mohammed Haider Abidi, 27, was riding a motorcycle when armed motorcyclists indicated him to stop ostensibly with intention of robbery near Abdullah College. When he did not stop, the suspects opened fire on him from behind and fled. He suffered a single bullet wound on his leg. The victim was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger. The policeman was posted in the Special Branch and was in plain clothes at the time of the incident.
