‘Real’ independence

DONALD Trump has won the presidential elections in the United States once again, and is ready to take what is considered to be the most powerful office in the world. What would be the consequences of his re-election for the world is a debate that is raging these days. From Pakistan’s point of view, the most important question seems to be about the possibility of Trump pressing Pakistan’s hand regarding the release of a former prime minister spending his time in Central Jail Adiala. However, one fails to understand why a particular group is so jubilant about the outcome of the elections in the US even though it had earlier been condemning the US for being allegedly behind the ouster of its leader from the seat of power in Pakistan. Perhaps the supporters are of the view that the US president-elect will ‘help’ out the leader because the so-called cipher case had taken place under the Democrats. If this is really the reason behind their upbeat mood, are they not deviating from their mantra of ‘haqeeqi azadi’, independent foreign policy and national sovereignty? Why are they pinning hopes on their leader’s equation — perceived or otherwise — with the incoming US president? Do they want the US to ‘liberate’ their leader and give the people ‘real independence’?
