KARACHI: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Centre, in a statement released for World Universal Health Coverage Day on Thursday, urged the government to prioritise healthcare as a fundamental human right by addressing disparities in access and reducing healthcare costs for the common man. This year’s theme, ‘Health: It’s on the government,’ emphasises the crucial role of governments in ensuring universal access to essential health services, regardless of socioeconomic status. “While progress has been made, significant gaps remain in achieving universal health coverage in Pakistan. Millions still lack access to essential healthcare, particularly in rural areas. The PMA calls for increased government investment, improved healthcare infrastructure, and a strengthened primary healthcare system to bridge these gaps,” said Dr Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, secretary general of PMA-Centre. He further highlighted the need for expanded health insurance coverage and greater healthcare literacy. “Expanding health insurance programmes can protect individuals and families from financial hardship due to medical expenses. Innovative financing mechanisms, such as social health insurance schemes, should be explored and implemented to make healthcare more affordable,” he stated. Dr. Shoro also emphasised the importance of public health campaigns and educational programmes to enhance health literacy and encourage preventive healthcare. “Empowering individuals with health information and encouraging preventive measures can significantly improve overall health outcomes,” he added.
