Law & order dicussed in Jacobabad seminar

SUKKUR: The Sindh Human Rights Commis­sion (SHRC) held a seminar in Jacobabad on Monday to discuss state of human rights in the district. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, chairperson of SHRC, highlighted the crucial role the commission was playing to highlight issues such as need to improve infrastructure of district jail, construction of a women and children police station in Jacobabad. He pointed out deteriorating condition of educational institutions, called for efforts to promote female participation in policing and the need for police reforms. Ayub Khoso, member of SHRC, lamented state of public infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and police stations was dilapidated in the district, there was no trauma and emergency hospital in the city, which had inadequate sewerage. The participants discussed political victimisation, police high-handedness, law and order challenges, child labour, forced migration of minorities, honour killing, abduction, extortion from vulnerable communities, theft and street crimes. The SHRC urged civil society to raise awareness via social media platforms, file public interest litigations and form a team of human rights defenders. The seminar reaffirmed SHRC’s commitment to improving human rights in Jacobabad district through advocacy, public awareness and collaboration with civil society and government authorities. The event was attended by members of civil society, community representatives, lawyers and general public. Earlier, the SHRC chief held meetings with SSP on law and order issues in the district.
