KARACHI: A man was shot dead in a suspected targeted attack in the Ancholi area late on Wednesday night, police said. They added that 40-year-old Syed Abu Haider Raza was shot and killed near his house in F.B Area, Block-20 near Imambargah by unknown suspects while a passer-by, Rizwan Badar, 58, was wounded. Samanabad SHO Hidayat Husain told Dawn that the deceased was sitting near his residence in the area when three suspects riding a motorcycle arrived there and opened fire. As a result, Abu Haider and passer-by Rizwan were injured. They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Abu Haider was pronounced dead on arrival. The officer said the victim was a trader by profession. He said it appeared to be a ‘targeted killing’, but the exact motive could not be ascertained immediately. However, he ruled out the possibility of a sectarian motive behind the incident. A section of media reported that the suspects had been arrested by law enforcers but SHO Husain denied it. A suspect was gunned down in an ‘encounter’ in Old Golimar on Thursday. Keamari SSP Faizan Ali said Pak Colony police had instructed two suspects to stop near Benazir Park but they resorted to firing and in retaliatory fire by the police, one suspect, identified as Fayaz, was killed while his accomplice managed to escape from the spot. The killed suspect was involved in encounters, attempted murders and robberies, and was among the most wanted street criminals in the city, the SSP said, adding that there were seven FIRs against him and he was also in five criminal cases in the recent past. Malir police on Thursday launched a grand operation against narcotics and drug addicts under directions of IGP Sindh and sent 120 addicts to Edhi Foundation’s rehabilitation centre, officials said. East-DIG Azfar Mahesar said the police had adopted a zero tolerance policy against narcotics to save the younger generation from its harmful effects. The young generation is increasingly becoming addicted to drugs, he said and urged people to cooperate with the police in crackdown on anti-social and criminal elements.
