KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday inaugurated a morgue at the Landhi Medical Complex. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the mayor said that the facility had long remained inactive despite millions of rupees being spent on it. He said the women members of the area had raised the issue, and now the free-of-cost service was operational. “The air conditioning system has also been fixed...the morgue will be converted to solar power by the end of January for better efficiency and electricity savings,” he said. He highlighted that 200 patients were treated daily at the Landhi complex, and plans were in place to establish a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts and a cardiac treatment ward. The mayor stated that certain elements were deliberately sabotaging the functioning of government institutions. Highlighting the “illegal occupation of 11,000 square yards of land” in Shah Rasool Colony by a bank, he expressed his determination to eliminate illegal encroachments in compliance with court orders. Declaring that no one would be allowed to hide behind a court stay order, he said that illegal construction on Orangi and Gujjar drains, as well as the Nasla Tower, had been demolished in compliance with court orders. He questioned why illegal encroachments were not noticed when the Aladdin Park was demolished. He said that he would continue to fight for the rights of the people of Karachi, despite any criticism directed at him. While acknowledging political differences, the mayor expressed his respect for Sindh governor and reaffirmed his resolve to serve the people of Karachi.
