KARACHI: The Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) is set to introduce a specialised diploma course
KARACHI: The Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) is set to introduce a specialised diploma course in urogynaecology from next year to cater to the needs of women suffering from pelvic floor disorders, urinary incontinence and other related health problems. The initiative was announced at an international symposium on urogynaecology organised by JSMU in collaboration with Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). It featured discussions on various topics, including surgical approaches to pelvic organ prolapse and fistula care, the role of urodynamic testing and the necessity of debunking myths surrounding urogynaecology. During the event, Prof Haleema Yasmin, head of department of gynae and obstetrics at JPMC, emphasised the critical impact of urogynaecological conditions on women’s health and quality of life. “Pelvic floor disorders, urinary incontinence, and other urogynaecological issues are often overlooked, resulting in unnecessary suffering for many women,” she stated. The symposium also highlighted the need for introducing diploma courses in urogynaecology, gynaecological oncology and feto-maternal medicine. According to officials, the urogynaecology diploma course will commence in January 2025 and run for one year. The programme’s faculty has been trained by Aga Khan University (AKU) under a collaborative effort.
