JI Bajaur general secretary killed in drive-by shooting

BAJAUR: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) local chapter general secretary Mohammad Hamid Sufi was killed when unknown gunmen opened fire on him in Inayat Kallay area of Khar tehsil here on Thursday evening, police and locals said. They said the incident occurred near the government college of technology at about 5:50pm. Mohammad Hamid Sufi was going home after offering evening prayers at the college street’s mosque when unknown assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on him, said Israr Khan, PRO of the district police. He told Dawn that 50-year-old Mohammad Hamid Sufi was critically wounded after receiving multiple bullets and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital Khar by local residents, where he was pronounced dead. Local residents and some party workers told Dawn late on Thursday evening that the assailants fled from the scene. No one has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack that sparked condemnation from people from all walks of life. A senior police officer accompanied by a team of police personnel visited the crime scene. He told Dawn that investigation was under way to ascertain the motive behind the incident and to trace those involved in it.
