PESHAWAR: An anti-terrorism court here on Friday convicted an accused for killing a policeman last year and sentenced him to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs200,000. The judge pronounced that the prosecution had proved its case against the accused, Jan Mohammad, a resident of Hayatabad (Peshawar), and he was found guilty of the offence. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment on two counts under section 302 of Pakistan Penal Code and section 7 (a) of the Anti-Terrorism Act. The accused, who is around 75, was also convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment on three counts under provisions of PPC, ATA and Arms Act. The court ordered that his sentences would run concurrently and also extended to him benefit of section 382-B of the Code of Criminal Procedure, under which, the period of his detention would be counted in his prison term. Senior public prosecutor Fazal Noorani appeared for the state and said that the accused was arrested red-handed and he was directly charged in the FIR registered at Tatara police station on Jul 18, 2023. He said a city patrolling unit of the police had raided a residence in Hayatabd after receiving reports about presence of an outlaw, Jan Mohammad there. The prosecutor said when the police party reached the residence the accused started firing, which resulted in injuries to a cop, Asif Ali. The counsel said the injured cop was shifted to a hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries. Mr Noorani argued that the evidence on record connected the accused with the commission of the offence and the prosecution witnesses had clearly deposed against him.
