Rawalpindi police told to improve working to check crime

RAWALPINDI: Since the crime situation in the district has deteriorated, police have decided to keep an eye on habitual offenders, who have been released from jail, arrest those involved in serious crimes with the direction to officers to SPs and SDPOs to improve their performances within a week. The decision was taken at a crime meeting held in the Police Lines Headquarters with City Police Officer Syed Khalid Hamdani in the chair on Tuesday. The meeting was held to review the implementation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) introduced by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for the police. Senior Superintendent of Police Operations Hafiz Kamran Asghar, the SSP investigation, divisional SPs, SDPOs and other officers participated in the meeting with their performance details. The CPO had already expressed his concern over the sharp increase in street crime in Rawal Division and directed the police to improve their police performance. The CPO reviewed the performances of Rawal, Potohar, Saddar divisions in addition to traffic police and instructed the SPs and SDPOs to intensify the ongoing crackdown against drug dealers, peddlers and criminal elements. He also directed the police to remain vigilant about habitual criminals who have been released from prison and monitor them besides arresting those involved in serious cases. Effective patrolling and snap checking should be done to ensure safety of life and property of citizens, the CPO said. The KPIs included the number of FIRs, crime control efforts, improvement in investigation of cases, action against drug suppliers, law and order situation, protection of women and vulnerable groups, complaint handling and accessibility to public, security, public service delivery and special initiatives. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz introduced the mechanism to evaluate the performance of the supervisory police officers across the province, including regional police officers (RPOs) and district police officers (DPOs). The chief minister had introduced 36 KPIs that would be used to assess the police performance and progress towards achieving specific objectives.
