ISLAMABAD: A US delegation led by Ms Karen Decker, chargé d’affaires for Afghanistan at Doha, and Acting Special US Representative for Afghanistan along with the current US chargé d’affaires at Islamabad, Ms Natalie Baker, visited Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI) to discuss issues related to Pakistan-United States cooperation on regional security, including Afghanistan. According to a statement issued on Thursday, the issues of resettlement of Afghan refugees, and the current security and humanitarian scenario in Afghanistan came under discussion. Pakistan’s concerns regarding presence of violent non-state actors in Afghanistan and the concomitant threats to region as well as the international community were discussed with the delegation. There was a consensus on the need for peace and stability in Afghanistan and the prevention of humanitarian crisis. The need for trade facilitation and counter narcotics role of Afghan Interim Government (AIG) also came under discussion, where the willingness of the AIG to contribute towards counter narcotics was deemed as a positive engagement plan. The US humanitarian aid of $2.2 billion after the US withdrawal in 2021 to Afghanistan through the UN channels was also highlighted as a positive contribution to keep humanitarian efforts afloat. IPRI was represented by former foreign minister Ambassador Inamul Haque, Pakistan’s former permanent representative to Afghanistan Ambassador Asif Ali Durrani, and Acting President IPRI, Dr Brig (retd) Raashid Wali Janjua.
