Chasing a mirage

THERE is a wild goose chase by thousands of young individuals every year to become doctors. They face uncertainty and chaos while preparing and appearing for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT), which has been a controversial process beyond doubt for the last several years. Yet, another set of thousands willingly submits itself to the whim and fancy of corrupt officials. We have brilliants mind like, for instance, Dr Waleed Malik, who won 29 gold medals when he graduated from a medical college in Lahore, but is still jobless. There are several posts on various social media platforms where he is seen narrating how, despite applying for a job at more than 20 hospitals, he has remained unemployed, and how merit gets trampled across the sector. If a medical gold medallist is working online as a freelancer to earn a living, what is it that makes people still want to get in the field? Trust me, there is life without being a doctor. Perhaps, it is a much better life than being a doctor.
