Governor demands restoration of student unions

LAHORE: Governor Saleem Haider Khan has added his voice to the calls for restoring student unions in educational institutions. Talking to a group of students from the Punjab University here on Tuesday, the governor said that student unions gave some of the best politicians to the country and added that he himself had stepped into the political arena through student politics in the college union. “Student unions are meant for developing leadership qualities among the students, creating political awareness among them, and providing them a platform to learn how to resolve their problems on their own,” he said, adding this forum should be revived as a nursery for training the students for national politics. Referring to the confrontational politics of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Mr Khan, who represents the PPP in the coalition government in Punjab, said the young generation had rejected the politics of chaos and arson. He called PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari a ray of hope for the youth who could steer the country out of the crises it was in. He listened to the issues shared by the students delegation about their studies and assured their resolution, urging them to focus on research and innovation during their studies. He said steps were being taken to improve the level of education at the universities in Punjab. PPP leader Faisal Mir, PSF office-bearers Sibt-e-Hassan, Ahsan Rizvi, and Mansoor Katariya were also present.
