Bahawalnagar: A law student of the Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) Bahawalnagar campus, who was attacked by his teacher 11 days ago, and got registered a case against the suspect, alleges inaction by police as well the varsity administration on his complaint. As per the FIR registered with the B Division police, the IUB lecturer, Iftikhar Ahmed, would often expel a student, Sajjad, of Mauza Suraj Singh, from the class, misbehave with him and threaten to fail him in the examination. He had also got Sajjad expelled from the university, but he was later reinstated. The student filed a complaint to the IUB vice chancellor against the teacher, that was marked to the Law Faculty Dean of IUB Bahawalnagar Campus, but to no avail. On October 23, Lecturer Iftikhar Ahmed, along with his two accomplices, allegedly attacked Sajjad, with bricks and sticks and also damaged his motorcycle. Police sources told Dawn that the student filed an application against the attackers the same day, however, police registered the case after a delay of seven days, following issuance of the medico-legal certificate (MLC) of the victim. Some university students, requesting anonymity, said that despite repeatedly visiting the police station, no progress had been made on the case investigation, while the inquiry being conducted by the IUB law faculty was also pending. They allege that incidents of harassment and misbehaviour against students are common in the university, while the administration tries to suppress such cases, instead of taking action against the offenders. In mid-October, the IUB administration suspended a lecturer allegedly for harassing a female student after delaying the action for several months, only after the complainant approached the local police. The female students mentioned in her complaint that the IUB anti-harassment sub-committee was trying to suppress her complaint instead of providing her with justice, they say. No university official was available for their stance on the issue. However, the police investigation officer (IO) of the case, Javed Akhtar, told Dawn that no progress was being made in the case so far as the suspect lecturer was not ready to appear before the police despite repeated reminders.
