QUETTA: Balochistan Governor Jaffar Khan Mandokhel has emphasised the importance of taking tangible steps to uphold women’s human rights, noting that while civilised societies around the world are enacting laws to protect the rights of animals and birds, the rights of women should not be overlooked. Speaking at a ceremony held at the Governor House on the occasion of “Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence”, he asked, “How can we remain indifferent to protecting the rights of women?” The event was participated by women representing various organisations, including UN Women, WHO, and the Women Development Department of Balochistan. The governor said that the next 16 days would focus on raising public awareness in the province. Among the attendees were Balochistan Assembly Deputy Speaker Ghazala Gola and chief minister’s advisers Rubaba Khan Buledi and Naseem-ur-Rehman Malakhail. Governor Mandokhel said: “Women are the pride and dignity of any human society, and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the protection of their rights and freedoms. Whether as a mother, sister, wife, or daughter, the relationship between men and women must always be based on honor and respect.” He said every aware individual in society must contribute to ensuring women’s rights and economic empowerment. He pointed out that the lack of economic independence among women often leaves them dependent on men in all aspects of life. The governor praised efforts made to prevent violence against women, especially during the 16 days of activism. “We must recognise that women are often better suited than men in areas such as educating children and managing household affairs.” Regarding the women of Balochistan, the governor said that although they are as talented and capable as women in other provinces, the lack of essential facilities and opportunities has hindered their progress in many aspects of life. He urged both the government and private institutions to take responsibility for developing new programmes that focus on the social and economic protection of women.
