Officials, elders vow joint efforts for N. Waziristan uplift

LAKKI MARWAT: The government authorities and the elders of North Waziristan tribal district have expressed their resolve to work together for the region’s development. The consensus was shown at a consultative meeting held at the divisional commissioner’s office in Bannu on Sunday. The meeting was convened on the directives of the provincial government to take tribal chiefs and public representatives on board for the area’s development. Divisional commissioner Mohammad Abid Khan Wazir, North Waziristan deputy commissioner Yousaf Karim and other relevant officials represented the government side. MNA Mufti Misbahuddin, special assistant to chief minister for settlement and relief Haji Nek Mohammad, MPA Iqbal Wazir, chief of Waziristan Malik Nasrullah Khan and others represented the other side. The participants stressed the need for launching joint efforts to achieve the goal of sustainable development. On the occasion, Mr Abid Wazir said that a committee comprising local elders and led by the deputy commissioner would be constituted at the tehsil level to take into account the people’s issues, and recommend steps for ending the backwardness of the region and people’s deprivations. Deputy commissioner Yousaf Karim said his administration would endeavour to ensure people’s uplift and bring lasting peace to the region. The elders said they would work side by side with the government for uplifting the tribal district and enabling the tribesmen to avail the fruits of development. TWO KILLED: Two young brothers were killed and their father sustained injuries in a gun attack in Lakki Marwat city on Sunday, the police said. City police station officials said the double murder took place in Meenakhel locality, identifying the deceased as Shaukatullah, 27, and Imranullah, 22, and injured, Bahadar Khan. They said the three were attacked outside their house. A Rescue 1122 official said they shifted the bodies and the injured to the Government City Hospital. The injured man told the police that he his sons were at home when someone knocked at the gate. He said when they went out, two accused, Qaizar Nawab and Jehangir, opened fire at them. “As a result, I and my sons received critical injuries and were shifted to a hospital by our relatives,” the complainant said, adding his sons breathed their last while on way to hospital. He said that the attackers escaped after the incident. The police said the bodies were handed over to relatives after completing medico-legal formalities. They said they had initiated an investigation after registering a case against the suspected killers under the relevant sections of law.
