BATTAGRAM: Road safety worries prompted locals to demand stringent laws prohibiting minors from operating motor vehicles here on Wednesday. Mohammad Usam, a local resident, emphasised that authorities were hesitant to take action against youth between the ages of 14 and 16 who were operating taxis and rickshaws without understanding traffic safety regulations. Battagram has experienced this problem before. Police must detain and seize automobiles as part of a district-wide campaign against underage drivers. Juvenile driving has been found to be a leading source of deadly traffic accidents, so the campaign should focus on discouraging it. Jawad Khan, another resident, told Dawn that in order to solve this problem, authorities might think about enforcing more stringent licensing regulations and raising public knowledge of road safety. Underage and unlicensed taxi and rickshaw drivers with inadequate driving skills are putting the lives of locals at danger every day. A sizable percentage of all traffic accidents in the district are caused by inexperienced drivers. According to Kaleemullah, a resident of Ajmera village, district Battagram has hilly roads with tight curves that might cause a vehicle to tumble into a deep ravine with just a slight mistake. He stated that it was noted in numerous incidents that drivers, who were speeding or lacked driving abilities, lost control of the steering wheel and flipped their vehicles into the deep ravine. They all urged the relevant authorities to take firm, nondiscriminatory action against the violators. Traffic police officials should call parents and guardians of underage drivers and warn them not to allow their children to drive or face severe consequences themselves.
