OVER the years, the country has witne-ssed several incidents involving the explosion of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders. One of the major incidents was in Hyderabad where many people had lost their lives in a blast inside a cylinder shop. After one such incident recently in Karachi’s Federal B Area, which claimed two lives, the Sindh government had taken action against all the shops dealing with LPG cylinders illegally and without prescribed precautionary measures in place. After a month, however, all such shops have again gone back to their illegal ways. This can only happen in connivance with the area police. I live in an apartment building in the Garden East area. There are three shops where such hazardous business is being carried out without following any standard operating procedure (SOP), posing a serious threat to human lives, especially to the residents of the apartment building. The authorities concerned should wake up before another tragedy takes place.
