Sanitary workers protest non-payment of salary

TOBA TEK SINGH: Sanitary workers of the Faisalabad Waste Management Company (FWMC) staged a rally on Friday to demand the payment of their pending salaries for the past five months. The rally started from District Council Chowk and concluded at the deputy commissioner’s office in Faisalabad. Led by Labour Qaumi Movement Chairman Baba Latif Insari and leaders of the Sanitary Workers Action Committee, including Pervez Iqbal Bhatti and Shahzad Wasim Pahlwan, the protesters voiced their grievances over the contractor company’s delay in payments. During talks with the workers’ leaders, Rana Sajid, contractor managing the workers, assured them that all outstanding wages would be paid. He also promised that the workers would receive appointment letters as employees of the company and be registered with EOBI. He confirmed that daily wagers would receive a salary of Rs37,000 per month as per provincial government notification. Following this assurance, the workers ended their sit-in and dispersed peacefully. A Pirmahal additional district and sessions judge sentenced a man to death on Friday in a murder case. Convict Saeed Ahmad of Chak 662/23-GB was also fined Rs500,000. According to the prosecution, Saeed Ahmad murdered Ahmad Hassan of Zakir Abad on Sept 10, 2022. The incident occurred on Pirmahal-Rajana Road when Ahmad Hassan was travelling in a rickshaw. The attack stemmed from an old enmity. A security guard was shot dead during a robbery attempt outside a medical store in Gojra on Thursday night. Three robbers riding a motorcycle attempted to rob a medical store on Moongi Bangla Road. When they tried to overpower security guard Imam Bakhsh, he resisted. The robbers opened fire, critically injuring him and fled without looting the store. Imam Bakhsh was rushed to the Gojra THQ Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way. Governor Sardar Saleem Haider inaugurated the four-day International Qutbia Tent Pegging Tournament in Sindhillianwali, Pirmahal, on Friday. The event, which runs until Dec 2, features teams from across Pakistan and abroad. Former MPA Syed Ibrar Hussain, his son Pir Syed Ali Baba, and PPP MNA Pir Syed Ali Musa Geelani were present at the inauguration. The tournament is expected to attract large crowds of equestrian enthusiasts.
