Quota for the disabled

THE implementation of five per cent quota for physically-challenged people in Sindh government jobs faces challenges. Despite being a positive initiative, the implemen- tation is hindered by corruption, nepotism and lack of transparency. Many deserving disabled individuals are denied opportunities due to political interference. Additionally, recruitment platforms and processes are often inacc-essible, limiting their participation. There is also a lack of awareness among the disabled about their rights and available opportunities. These issues undermine the purpose of the quota, turning it into a challenge rather than a solution for empowering disabled individuals. To ensure effective implementation of the quota for disabled individuals in Sindh government jobs, strict enforce-ment measures must be adopted. This should be followed by regular audits and penalties for non-compliance. Transparent, merit-based recruitment processes should be monitored by inde-pendent oversight bodies to eliminate corruption and nepotism. Accessibility must be prioritised by creating inclusive job portals and physically accessible workplaces. Additionally, vocational training programmes should be introduced to enhance the skills and employability of disabled individuals. Besides, public awareness campaigns are essential to educate disabled persons about their rights and available opportunities, alongside establishing grievance mechanisms to address all the complaints effectively.
