LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday expressed serious concern over reports about felling trees in the provincial metropolis for the construction of depots for electric buses and ordered an investigation into the matter. During a hearing, a member of a court-made environmental commission revealed that trees were cut down in Lahore to construct depots for e-buses. Justice Shahid Karim expressed concern over the matter and remarked that there should be an investigation into where the felled trees were taken. He observed that if the claim of tree felling proved true, legal action would be taken against those responsible for the act. Seeks work-from-home policy for offices, schools The judge also sought an explanation from the transport department secretary regarding the cutting of trees for e-bus depots. The judge further directed the development of a data software system for vehicle inspections and instructed the government to form a “work from home” policy for offices and schools. Justice Karim expressed displeasure over making environment commission’s members a party to a contempt petition related to action at Tollinton Market and dismissed the petition with a fine of Rs50,000. The judge remarked that advice had been given to the government to control smog, including the suggestion of transferring low-performing deputy commissioners to improve administrative issues. The judge noted that the smog has not been completely eradicated and could suddenly return. He further directed the government to continue the ban on the construction work. The judge adjourned the hearing till Dec 3.
