150 QAU students booked for ‘taking police, varsity officials hostage’

ISLAMABAD: The capital police have registered a case against 150 students of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) for making police and university officials hostage, police said on Friday. According to the FIR, on Nov 4, at about 10pm, the manager received a call from a student Asad Turi, who informed him that he had made hostage a few police officials, who were checking students near the cafeteria. He asked him to immediately come to the university and ask the police high-ups why the police officials have been sent to the university to check the students. The manager immediately called Ansar Mehmood, the security officer on duty, to rush to the site to resolve the issue. A few minutes later, he was informed by university security control room operator that the security officer has also been made hostage by the students. The managers along with Director Students’ Affairs, Dr Amanat Ali, immediately rushed towards university to prevent students from resorting to violence. When they reached the university, approximately 150 students were present near the cafeteria under the leadership of Asad Turi. The manager tried to negotiate with the students however, Asad Turi, Sulman Marwat, along with 150 students made them hostage. Asad Turi and Sulman Marwat delivered speeches full of hatred against the university administration, Islamabad police and Islamabad administration, inciting the gathering to maltreat the manager and Dr Amanat Ali. Asad Turi along with Sulman Marwat, humiliated them in front of the gathering of students and recorded videos against their will. Asad Turi kept them under forced captivity for more than two hours and demanded their resignation. He also incited the crowd to chant anti-establishment, antipolice and anti-administration slogans. Meanwhile, few students from other communities rescued them. Asad Turi and Sulman Marwat along with 150 students committed a crime by making them hostage and keeping us under captivity for more than two hours, humiliating them publicly, delivering hate speeches, maltreating and mentally torturing and making videos against their will. The case was registered with Secretariat police under sections 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), 342 (Punishment for wrongful confinement), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) in response of a complaint lodged by a campus manager of QAU.
