TAXILA: A special court for the Control of Narcotic Substances (CNS) in Taxila on Friday acquitted an accused in a drug case registered against him with Wah Saddar police station in 2023. In a detailed order announced by the judge of the court of Control of Narcotic Substances (CNS) Additional Sessions Judge Farhan Mudassir, questions were raised about poor investigation by the police. According to the order, a citizen named Basharat Ali, a resident of Muneerabad, was arrested by Sub-Inspector Zaheer Ahmed of Wah Saddar police in 2023 on suspicion of drug trafficking. Later, the police registered a case against him after 1.6kg hashish was seized from him. During the hearing, statements of Sub-Inspector Raja Deedar and other police employees were recorded. During the trial, it transpired that the accused neither had any previous record of drug trafficking nor had he been nominated in any other case. The hashish was presented as evidence against the accused by the police. During the trial, Basharat’s counsel, Raja Tahir advocate, and his team argued that the citizen was falsely implicated in the case as the FIR and subsequent challan showed lack of communication and police negligence during the course of investigation. Agreeing with the arguments of the lawyer, the court ordered the acquittal of the accused. Following the acquittal, the court sent a release order to the superintendent of the Central Jail Adiala and ordered Basharat be released immediately. The court also ordered that the hashish presented by the police as evidence should be disposed of in accordance with law.
