LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday struck down the preventive detention of PTI’s former MNA Tahir Iqbal from Vehari and set him free. Earlier, the government presented the PTI leader before the court in compliance with its direction. A law officer assured the court that Iqbal would not be arrested in any new case. Justice Amjad Rafiq disposed of a petition of Iqbal setting aside his detention. During the hearing, petitioner’s lawyer Azhar Siddique pointed out that despite previous court orders nullifying detention orders, Tahir Iqbal was transferred from Vehari to Mianwali Jail, which constituted a clear case of contempt of court. He alleged that the government was planning to implicate the petitioner in fabricated cases if his detention is set aside. The lawyer stated that the LHC had already suspended the operation of section 3 of the MPO Ordinance 1960. He asked the court to issue orders for the petitioner’s release and ensure compliance with the law. TAX COMMITTEE: The Lahore Tax Bar Association has appointed Nasir Qadir Bhadal as chairman of its Public Sector Tax Committee for session 2024-25. Bar Association President Shahbaz Siddique expressed the hope that the committee chairman would perform his obligation in the best interest of the bar.
