CHARSADDA: Qaumi Watan Party provincial chairman Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao has condemned the Peshawar police for tear-gassing and baton-charging local government representatives and said the action against peaceful protesters was unacceptable. Addressing a gathering of workers at the residence of QWP leader Asif Kamal Khan in Utmanzai area here on Thursday, Mr Sikandar questioned under which law and mandate, the police tortured local government representatives during their peaceful rally meant to demand legal and constitutional rights. “On one hand, PTI leadership is claiming that holding protests in D-Chowk Islamabad are the legal and constitutional right of its workers but on the other, the provincial government has resorted to firing tear gas at and baton-charging government representatives in Peshawar,” Mr Sikandar said. QWP district chairman Qaiser Jamal Hashangri and leaders Mushtaq Khan and Asif Kamal Khan also addressed the meeting. The QWP provincial chief welcomed a peace agreement in Kurram tribal district. He regretted that the Kurram accord was delayed for three months, leading to the loss of precious lives and damage to properties. Mr Sikandar added that the Kurram violence cut off over 0.6 million people from the rest of the country for three months. He said all points of the Kurram accord should be strictly implemented. The QWP chief expressed concern about the growing incidents of militancy in the province during the last 10 months. He urged the provincial government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to provide protection and rights to people of the province and obtain provincial resources from the Center. He said a “movement” would be launched to obtain Pakhtun rights from the centre after the death anniversary of Hayat Mohammad Sherpao was marked on Feb 8. “We won’t leave Pakhtun nation alone,” he said. Mr Sikandar said 10 months had passed since the government came into being but the province was still unstable. He said the PTI government in the province was staging protests and sit-ins, ignoring the problems of the people, while the federal government was busy scoring political points. “Both governments are not paying heed to problems of the province and people because their priorities are different,” he said. The QWP provincial chief said it was the government’s responsibility to provide a peaceful environment to the people to live and obtain its due funds from the centre. “We demand the grant of constitutional and legal rights to people across the province,” he said.
