TOBA TEK SINGH: The Faisalabad Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) booked on Sunday a Gojra land record office (LRO) clerk for misappropriation of Rs160,000, which he received illegally from a land purchaser. Complainant Muhammad Waseem Anwar of Chak 246 GB Basti Danishmandan said in his FIR, registered under sections 161 of the Pakistan Penal Code and 5-2-47 of PCA, that he bought 9.13 kanals from a landowner, and for its transfer in his name, LRO clerk Faheem Raza received from him Rs390,000 but deposited a lesser amount in the exchequer, misappropriating Rs160,000. Raids were being conducted to arrest the suspect. Dr Mazhar Abbas, principal investigator of a research project ‘Women’s Land/Property Rights in Pakistan: Laws, Policies and Practices’, organised on Sunday a national seminar on women’s land/property rights. Dr Abbas, who teaches history at Government College University of Faisalabad, said that providing opportunities to students, especially women, and playing a role in their development is among his priorities. He added that if women themselves are talking about their rights, it carries more weight. Other women will give more importance to the words of their fellow human beings, i.e., women, than the words of the opposite sex. The seminar presented a comprehensive study on laws, policies, and their practical implementation. It featured female speakers, including Malaika Noor and Chasman Pari, who emphasised the legal framework and Islamic principles advocating for women’s land/property rights. Laiba Adnan and Guldasta Pashteen explored national and provincial policies and highlighted how they weave pathways for women’s land ownership. Amna Hareem and Samreen Maqsood presented challenges faced in implementing laws and policies and possible solutions to address them. A young man died by suicide in Chak 42/15-L of Mianchannu in the Khanewal district on Sunday. Reports said Abdul Qayyum, 23, shot himself and was critically injured. He was shifted to Mianchannu THQ hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The reason behind his suicide could not be known. WASA: Faisalabad Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) private team staff took action on Sunday against a private housing scheme, Divine Enclave, on Canal Road, and disconnected a sewerage pipeline being laid illegally in the streets of the scheme. A press release said Wasa’s anti-illegal housing schemes directorate assistant director, Mian Maqsood Ahmad, supervised the action, and the Wasa team took into custody a 4,000-foot sewerage pipeline from which connections were to be installed for the residents without prior approval of Wasa. However, the employees and officials of the housing scheme escaped during the raid.
