Trapped turtle rescued in Dera Ghazi Khan

DERA GHAZI KHAN: A freshwater river turtle was rescued and released into Taunsa Barrage. The Indian softshell turtle (Nilssonia gangetica) was successfully rescued from the barrage gauge upstream of Taunsa Barrage in a rescue operation led by Javed Iqbal, a dedicated group member, with the assistance of his local team. The turtle was trapped in the barrage gauge which posed a serious threat to its well-being. Acting swiftly and efficiently, the team safely captured the turtle, ensuring no harm to the animal. After a thorough assessment, it was released back into the river where it could continue to thrive in its natural habitat. This initiative highlights the importance of preserving local biodiversity and protecting vulnerable aquatic species. The Indian softshell turtle of Ganges softshell turtle is an essential part of freshwater ecosystems, contributing to the ecological balance by feeding on aquatic plants and small invertebrates.
