The grade five students enjoyed their science lesson in which their teacher, Miss Uzma, discussed plastic pollution. Their excitement soared when she announced a community service trip to Clifton Beach. Although picking up trash seemed daunting, everyone agreed that doing it with friends would make it fun. The big day arrived, and the students got on the bus, chattering eagerly. The bus weaved through the streets, and soon they arrived at the beach, greeted by the sound of crashing waves and the scent of salty air. The students were given gloves, masks, trash bags, and tongs for their task. Under their teachers’ supervision, they began collecting trash, enjoying the cool breeze and the sight of the sea as they worked. Maryam and her friends were especially attentive, discussing what they had learned online about plastic pollution. They were disturbed to learn how microplastics harmed marine life, including their favourite sea creatures — fish. As they worked, Maryam spotted a trail of tire tracks leading away from the shoreline. Curious, she pointed it out to her friends, and together they followed it. The trail led them to a large pile of industrial-grade plastic waste — discarded packaging, containers, and other debris bearing labels from local factories. “This isn’t just litter,” said Fatima. “This is industrial waste. Who could be dumping this here?” “Let’s tell Miss Uzma,” Yusra suggested. Their teacher was shocked when they showed her the pile. Determined to understand more, Miss Uzma approached a group of vendors selling snacks nearby and asked if they had noticed anything unusual. One vendor revealed that late at night, green-coloured trucks would often arrive to dump waste at the site. On the way back to school, Miss Uzma praised the students for their dedication and promised to report the matter to the local authorities. That evening, Maryam told her parents about the discovery. Living near the beach, her parents were equally concerned and decided to investigate. That night, they accompanied Maryam to the beach, equipped with a camera phone. Around midnight, as the vendor had described, the headlights of green trucks appeared in the distance. Maryam and her parents filmed as the trucks dumped large amounts of waste on the beach. After the trucks left, they cautiously followed them from a safe distance. The trucks eventually stopped outside a large facility with a sign reading ABC Waste Management. The next morning, Maryam showed the footage to her friends and Miss Uzma. Recognising the importance of their discovery, they decided to bring it to the attention of the whole world, and, with Miss Uzma’s help, Maryam and her friends edited the video and made a short documentary. They added captions explaining the environmental impact of such dumping and tagged the relevant authorities when they uploaded the video to their school’s social media page. The video quickly gained attention, going viral within hours. Environmental activists and concerned citizens amplified the issue, pressuring local authorities to act. An official investigation was launched, confirming that ABC Waste Management had been illegally dumping industrial waste at the beach. The company was heavily fined, and its operations were temporarily shut down. Authorities also issued strict warnings to other companies in the region, ensuring better monitoring of industrial waste disposal. The school principal praised Maryam and her classmates for their bravery and initiative. Maryam felt proud knowing she had contributed to protecting marine life and raising awareness about an important issue.
