SAN SEBASTIAN: Barcelona manager Hansi Flick offered no excuses for his side’s poor showing in a surprise 1-0 defeat at Real Sociedad on Sunday that ended their seven-match winning streak in all competitions. Flick praised their opponents’ performance and said Barca had to move on with his side still top of the LaLiga standings on 33 points, six ahead Real Madrid who have a game in hand in second, “Today was not our day,” Flick told a press conference. “I think we have to accept this result because they played decisively. It’s clear, there are no excuses. We didn’t create enough chances. We started well with the ball, I was happy, but then we started to suffer and their goal came. We also made some bad decisions and that’s something we have to live with.” Barca had scored in every single match they played until Sunday, but finished the game at San Sebastian with no shots on target. Sheraldo Becker’s 33rd-minute goal consigned them to their second league defeat of the season and Sociedad created several chances and could have won by a wider margin following a series of bad mistakes by an erratic Barca defence. “The responsibility for the defeat is ours. We could and should have played much better,” Flick said. “Today we weren’t strong enough to deserve a better result.” Missing teenager Lamine Yamal, who had not fully recovered from a right ankle injury suffered in their Champions League win at Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday, Barca thought they had opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Robert Lewandowski fired home a rebound from inside the box, but the goal was ruled out by the VAR, who spotted the Polish striker was marginally offside in the build up. Sociedad then took control of the match and, after Barca goalkeeper Inaki Pena made a fine save to deny a Mikel Oyarzabal free kick, Becker beat the offside trap to race on to a Luka Sucic header before slotting a tidy finish just inside the post. Flick brought on Dani Olmo for the ineffective Frenkie de Jong at half-time but Barcelona remained second best. Becker screwed a shot wide after Jules Kounde did just enough to put off the Real Sociedad winger, and Ander Barrenetxea also squeezed an effort wide from a tight angle after bursting into the area. Despite scoring 40 goals in their first 12 league matches Barca were unable to create any significant danger in the final stages. “We really wanted to win at home and there was no better team to do it against,” said Sociedad midfielder Brais Mendez. “They are the most in-form team in Europe and the fans deserved a night like this.” Earlier, Julian Alvarez earned Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win at Mallorca to take the Rojiblancos up to third on 26 points, one behind Real. Diego Simeone’s Atletico side secured their fourth consecutive victory across all competitions in a tight clash at Mallorca’s Son Moix stadium. Alvarez netted his fourth league goal since joining Atletico from Manchester City in the summer in the 61st minute after being set up unselfishly by Diego Simeone’s son Giuliano Simeone. Simeone said his side had not let Wednesday’s last-gasp 2-1 win at Paris St Germain in the Champions League go to their heads and had stuck to their defensive gameplan against Mallorca. “The players made a huge effort and worked hard after our game in Paris; it wasn’t easy to get away from all the praise they got and work with humility to defend all the crosses that Mallorca make in every game,” Simeone told a press conference. “In football you always live for today, as in life; what came before, what you enjoyed yourself, what you did... they are just memories. You have to deliver it here and now, it’s the reality of life, the day to day.” Elsewhere, Girona’s Yangel Herrera headed home in the first half to give last year’s surprise package a 1-0 victory at Getafe and earn them successive league wins for the first time in more than two months that lifted lifted them to 18 point and into ninth place.
