AMBALA: The principal convicts in the Gandhi Murder Conspiracy Case, Nathuram Vinayak Godse and Narayan D Apte, sentenced to death by Special Court in Delhi’s Red Fort on Feb 10 this year, were hanged early today [Nov 15] in Ambala jail. Both the condemned prisoners were taken out from their cells … and led to the gallows five minutes before eight a.m., the time fixed for their execution. Nathuram Godse is reported to have died instantaneously while Apte was alive for two minutes after mounting the scaffold. Their bodies were kept hanging for about 30 minutes as a matter of procedure and were cremated today by the jail authorities. No member of the public or Press was allowed to see the execution which was witnessed by five officials. ... The relatives of Godse and Apte were not permitted to be present at the time of the cremation, PTI officially learnt. The agency further learnt that the prisoners while going to the gallows behaved “well”. There [were] no demonstrations of any nature in front of or near about the jail premises or in the city or cantonment.
