LAHORE: The police arrested a student, his brother and their friends on Monday following an incident of aerial firing on the Punjab University’s new campus. According to reports, a male and a female student were sitting on a motorcycle in the parking lot near the Gender Studies Department when a group of Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) activists approached them. An altercation ensued, during which IJT activists allegedly harassed the students, prompting the male student to call his elder brother. Arriving with his friends in a car, the student’s brother attempted to defuse the situation. However, when the IJT activists encircled and began to beat them, the student’s brother reportedly pulled out a pistol and fired shots into the air. The IJT activists restrained him, allegedly damaging his vehicle and continuing to assault him. Security guards detained the student, his brother and their friends, and confiscated the firearm before handing them over to police. Following the incident, IJT activists staged a protest, demanding tighter campus security and stricter control over the entry of outsiders, questioning how individuals with weapons were able to access university grounds. A Punjab University spokesperson confirmed that the individuals involved were handed over to police, and a case was registered against them.
