Vicious cycle

THE recent Greek shipwreck in which four Pakistanis were reported to have died was not the first incident in which a large number of people, if missing persons are also counted among the dead, lost their life while trying to reach Europe. Hundreds of people have died not only at sea, but also while crossing borders of friendly countries on foot or in containers. I do not find the words to express my deep grief for the people who lost their lives for a better future. Also, it is beyond comprehension that they paid up to Rs3 million each for this risky trip without realising the possible outcome of such an adventure. I am sure this practice will continue in future as well, and those responsible for this gruesome act will soon be let off the hook. After every such incident, there are hollow promises made by the government to teach a lesson to those who are involved in the illegal trade of human trafficking, but nothing happens as influential people are involved in this heinous business. The media, on its part, moves on after covering the tragedy because it loses ‘news value’. As happens every time, there will be condolence meetings, politicians will meet the aggrieved families, there will be promises of compensation, and then the whole thing will be forgotten.
