ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Special Initiatives on Wednesday expressed its displeasure over the absence of Capital Development Authority (CDA) chairman in the meeting. The committee chaired by Syed Abdul Qadir Gillani, besides other agenda items, was supposed to discuss the agenda related to alleged illegal recruitments and encroachments in the capital city. The absence of the CDA chairman drew strong disapproval from the committee, resulting in the deferment of related agenda items until his attendance is ensured. Earlier, the committee received a presentation on Emerson College, Multan, highlighting the urgent need for a new academic block to address emerging trends in artificial intelligence (AI) and information technology (IT). Members discussed potential funding avenues to ensure the timely execution of this critical educational initiative. The committee also reviewed development projects under the Public Works Department (PWD), seeking clarity on fund flow, disbursement, and project execution. Members voiced dissatisfaction with the information provided, highlighting concerns over transparency and effectiveness. During a briefing on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, members emphasised the strategic importance of prioritising the western route. The committee sought more detailed updates on the status and progress of these projects. In a significant decision, a subcommittee was formed under the convenership of Maj. Tahir Iqbal to review the status of a project aimed at providing essential medicines to cancer patients, supported by Roche International. The committee emphasised the need for expediting such critical public welfare initiatives without delay.
